From crisis to comfort – John's journey with InnaCare

John is living with advanced dementia. He has no close family to support him, and for a long time, he was left to cope on his own. Over time, his memory declined to the point where he was frequently getting lost in the community — each incident increasing the risk to his life and wellbeing.
Neighbours and local Police became increasingly concerned. It was through their support and persistence that Social Services were alerted. Together, they helped John understand — with great difficulty — that living alone was no longer safe. He needed support, not just to survive, but to live with dignity.
As an emergency measure, Social Services arranged for a live-in care package through InnaCare.
At first, John was resistant. Yesterday, he didn’t want to engage, didn’t want help, and couldn’t see the value in having someone in his space. He was distressed, confused, and unsure of who to trust.
But today tells a different story.
With the gentle, steady support of Emmanuel — one of our experienced and compassionate live-in carers — John stepped outside the house for the first time in days. They visited a local café. Emmanuel sat beside him, listened, reassured him, and most importantly, didn’t rush him. Slowly, John opened up. He had a hot meal, sipped his coffee, and began to relax.
This is what person-centred care looks like.
Not just ticking boxes or providing tasks. It’s about rebuilding trust. Creating safety where there was fear. Offering companionship where there was isolation. And walking alongside someone until they feel human again — not just cared for, but truly seen.
